4 Struggles Every Franchise Conference Faces

If you’re planning your annual franchise conference right now, this is for you.

Nobody handed you a playbook for this. You’re juggling logistics, sponsors, speakers, and a room full of franchisees who have very high expectations and very little patience for the same experience they had last year.

We’ve produced enough franchise conferences to know that the struggles are almost always the same four things. And the good news? So are the fixes. Here’s what we see — and what to do about it.

Struggle #1: The Awards Ceremony Is on Autopilot

Most franchise conferences have an awards ceremony. And at most of them, everyone in the room already knows who’s going to win before they sit down.

The categories haven’t changed in five years. The list keeps getting longer because nobody wants to take an award away. And franchisees — who genuinely love being recognized in front of their peers — end up checking their watches during the part of the conference that’s supposed to mean the most.

Recognition done right is one of the most powerful tools you have. It creates LinkedIn moments, IG moments, and emotional buy-in that money can’t buy.

But it only works if it feels earned.

One fix to start with: Add peer-nominated categories. Franchisees voting for franchisees hits differently than corporate picking winners. And audit your award list every year — raise the bar, sunset categories that have lost meaning, and rotate in new ones that reflect where the brand is actually going.

We share a few more ideas for keeping the ceremony fresh — including one that gets franchisees invested in coming back before they even leave the room — in the video above.

Struggle #2: Attendance Is Harder to Win Than It Used to Be

Franchisees are entrepreneurs. Two days away from their business and their family is not a small ask — and they do the math every year on whether the trip is worth it.

If last year felt like a waste, they just don’t come. And once you’ve lost them on attendance, you’re stuck trying to convince them why they should come back instead of building something they can’t wait to attend.

Tease the location. Roll out speaker reveals one at a time and have the speakers personally invite people on video.

There’s also a move involving spouses that we’ve seen completely change the energy around franchise conference attendance — and it’s simpler than you’d think..

Struggle #3: Sponsors Feel Like an Afterthought

Sponsors fund a huge chunk of your conference. And at most events, you can tell they were treated like an ATM.

The goal is simple: give sponsors real ROI while making sure your franchisees never feel like they’re being sold to. Those two things aren’t at odds — but you have to be intentional about it.

One fix to start with: Move your sponsor area into the action, not across the venue from it. There’s nothing that signals “afterthought” more than placing your sponsors in a room people don’t even walk past on the way to the next session. Make it the place to be.

In the video, we walk through some creative sponsorship activations that are working right now, including one AI-powered photo experience that franchisees are sharing on social without being asked.

Struggle #4: The Conference Feels Stale

Same agenda. Same speakers. Same awards. Franchisees walk in already knowing what the next two days look like.

When people know exactly what to expect, they tune out — or they just don’t come. The format itself sends a message. So change one or two big things every year. Not the whole conference. Just enough to make people wonder what’s different this time. When something feels fresh, people lean in.

A few formats worth trying:

Shark Tank pitches. Have franchisees pitch ideas that could be the next big thing in the system. Corporate funds the winner for one location. Then that franchisee presents the results at next year’s conference

Game show sessions. Price Is Right where a franchisee guesses the cost of their own product. Family Feud built on real answers from a pre-event franchisee poll. Jeopardy with brand history and inside jokes. People remember what made them laugh.

Nonprofit activations. Bring in a local nonprofit on the last day before everyone heads home. We did a 60-minute relay at one conference where attendees packed school supplies for kids in need — nearly 800 boxes. The franchisees went home with something that had nothing to do with revenue, and everything to do with why they’re in business.

And don’t overlook your most underused asset: your franchisees themselves. The real insight lives on the other side of the stage. Let them co-create a session or four. You’ll get better content and built-in buy-in before the conference even starts.

Have some fun with it, too. A “Hot Ones”-style interview with your CEO that gets harder as the questions get spicier. A franchisee celebrity lookalike slideshow. Then-and-now photos from grand opening day to today. “What’s your franchisee spirit animal?” answers scrolling on screen during a break.
