The Thompson Foundation came to Utopia twelve months before opening day. Over the course of a year, our team worked alongside the Foundation on everything from venue sourcing and hotel logistics to vendor coordination, registration, VIP gifting, and production planning — so that by the time May arrived, the only thing left to do was execute.

Five Experiences. Three Venues. Two Days.
Grand openings of this scale have a lot of moving pieces — and each one needs its own attention. The two-day celebration included five distinct experiences:
- Private Donor Walkthrough
- Downtown Declaration with the Mayor
- Invite-Only Welcome Reception
- Invite-Only Donor After Party
- Grand Opening
Each had its own agenda, its own guest list, and its own goal — and each needed to feel distinct while still fitting together as one cohesive celebration. The evening before the ribbon cutting, the City of Columbia officially proclaimed itself an Autism Friendly City. The following day moved from outdoor ceremony to indoor reception to formal program — with Marching Mizzou, Truman the Tiger, elected officials, university leadership, and three generations of the Thompson family all part of the day.
Utopia sourced and secured vendors, built and managed the registration platform, handled alcohol permitting, designed venue layouts, provided AV across venues, created a single run of show threading all five experiences together, and ran every moment of both days on the ground.
The Challenge: When Plans Change
With an event of this scope, last-minute changes aren’t the exception — they’re part of the job. Two weeks before doors opened, our team was back at the table sourcing a venue for an additional VIP after party. That meant finding a space that could accommodate 80 guests, securing a caterer,and securing a alcohol permit, on a compressed timeline.
We found it. We booked it. The guests never knew it hadn’t been planned all along.
A Room Full of People Who Earned This Moment
More than 1,000 donors from 32 states and Japan contributed to making the new facility possible. Many of them were in that room. The program included remarks from University of Missouri President Dr. Mun Choi, former Missouri Governor Mike Parson, Missouri State Auditor Scott Fitzpatrick, founders Bill and Nancy Thompson, and Thompson Foundation Board President Ron Ashworth.
The most memorable moment of the day came from Blake Hinkel, who stood before the crowd and spoke about what the Thompson Center has meant to his life. “Because of so many amazing people, including those at the Thompson Center, I can talk, I can read, I can type, and I can cook better than my mom.” The room laughed, and then went quiet.
